Mesmers have only a small heal, but don't neglect their awesome damage avoidance abilities. They have some of the most powerful ones in the game, especially in PVE where you can easily predict what types of elemental damage you'll be dealing with.

Distortion for 75% evade vs. Melee
Mantra of Fire/Ice/etc for huge damage reduction vs. Elemental types (and extra energy too!)
Illusion of Weakness effectively raises your max hp by 50-202 if you have a monk to heal you between battles.
Elemental/Physical Resistance for a nice armor buff (but found late in PVE, I think; my Me/R never found it)

pvp ranger is hard because everything they can do, someone else can do better. Interrupt casters? Be a mesmer. Steady damage flow? Be a warrior. Huge Burst Range damage? Be and elementalist. Healing? lol be a monk.

The following are (generally) all the sucessful pvp rangers off the top of my head

Trapper (R/doesnt matter)

This is uncommon, and is used to get some nice AoE damage. It takes advantage of the ranger's low priority, and usually can pump enough damage and conditions to be an effective contributer to the team.

Sniper (R/Mo or R/E)

While much criticized for not being as good as other classes, damage rangers actually can work quite well. They combine the strengths of 3 classes. Interupt (me), steady damage (wa) and range (ele). Used correctly they are as deadly as any other damage class.

Harasser (R/Me)

Based completely around interupt and anti-cast. Super energy denial, interupt, energy regain, dispel, basically everything to make life hell for monks and eles. This is the only type of ranger that I think usually should end up with a bar of mostly secondary class skills. (ranger, 5 mes)

The main turn off to partys about rangers is that they can do little to help out the team as a whole. No tanking, no healing, nothing. What they dont realize s that they add amazing damage and really can take care of themselves (they dont often need to be healed by monks because of defense stances and troll unguent)
